Preparatory

Ages 9–10 | Three training days per week

Preparatory is the third tier in Adage Ballet Academy’s curriculum and is designed for young dancers who are ready to enter a more committed stage of classical ballet study. Intended for students approximately ages nine to ten, this tier continues the progression from Elementary while also welcoming new dancers by audition and placement. Age provides a general framework, but placement is determined by a dancer’s physical, technical, and artistic readiness, so that each student enters the level best suited to their development. At this stage, students begin preparing for the more physically demanding work of ballet training, including the foundation necessary for future pointe work.

About Preparatory

The Preparatory curriculum gives dancers a more complete experience of classical training while continuing to support the whole student. Dancers receive eight hours of instruction per week over three training days, with classes in ballet technique, pre-pointe, Yin Yoga, physical conditioning, and ballet theory. Technique classes introduce students to the structure of a standard ballet class with greater consistency, including barre, center practice, musical coordination, spatial organization, and the development of classical vocabulary. Pre-pointe and conditioning work support the strength, alignment, articulation, and physical readiness required for future pointe training, while Yin Yoga offers a quieter complement through release, stillness, flexibility, and recovery. Ballet theory gives students the opportunity to understand the art form more deeply, connecting the physical practice of ballet to its terminology, structure, history, and expressive traditions.

As a performing academy, Adage believes stage experience to be an essential part of a dancer’s education. Preparatory students participate in major productions such as Winter Tales and the Spring Showcase, where they begin to take on more substantial rehearsal and performance responsibilities. At this level, dancers may be asked to learn multiple roles, maintain clearer spacing and musical timing within an ensemble, and develop theatrical skills through gesture, pantomime, and character work. These experiences allow students to discover the discipline and joy of performance while learning that ballet is not only a technical practice, but an art form shaped by music, story, theater, and shared responsibility.

Preparatory students attend three classes per week.

Monday – 4:00–6:30 PM

Wednesday – 5:00–7:30 PM

Friday – 4:00–7:00 PM

This schedule provides young dancers with consistent weekly training while remaining age-appropriate for their third stage of study at Adage Ballet Academy. To keep families connected to their dancer’s progress, Adage hosts six official observation days throughout the year, aligned with the end of each six-week session. These observation days give families the opportunity to see how their dancer is developing within the class environment and to better understand the progression of the curriculum.
